Bonus Scenes

Stories we can't leave behind

Sometimes we have to make hard decisions in the edit. Here's a couple of scenes that didn't make the film.

Field Trip to Skagway 2

Wayne and Violet took a field trip to the Skagway Museum to see ‘Grandmother’, the century-old dugout canoe that is a centrepiece of the museum. Over the years this artifact helped Wayne understand the old techniques, and he took his apprentice Violet to see the canoe and help measure it.

Harvesting Birchbark

Because we filmed with Halin over three years, we filmed him harvesting bark several times. It's a fascinating process and this sequence shows some Halin's approach and the precision and care taken in the harvesting of birchbark. He also takes a portable sawmill into the woods to mill the lumber for use in constructing the canoe.

Professor Price

Not only does Wayne Price teach and mentor in the community, for the past three years he has taught at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau. His Northwest Coast art classes are the most in-demand on campus. We were invited to spend time with Professor Price and his students.

Artists Need to Eat

Part of Halin's story as an artist is his versatility: he pursues all kinds of creative work to make his life in Dawson. Much of this could not be shared in the feature film. In addition to fine art paintings he is a mural artist, sign painter and sculptor in several mediums.
